1863 Signed and Numbered Limited Edition Monument Replicas
The 73rd New York was commanded at the Battle of Gettysburg by Major Michael Burns while Colonel William R. Brewster commanded the brigade. With its core formed by New York City firefighters, the 73rd New York was also known as the 2nd Fire Zouaves (and the 4th Excelsior for its position in the Excelsior Brigade). In fierce fighting on July 2, 1863, Barksdale’s Mississippians drove the 73rd New York back, the rebels “firing and shrieking like Indians.”
The monument is located on Sickles Avenue and was dedicated in 1897.
